Deer Isle - Deer Isle (Island) Adult & Community Education has received a grant of $10,000 from the Belvedere General Charitable Grantmaking Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to bring an expanded Island Family Learning program to local residents.

"This grant will allow us to create a sustainable program to continue Linda Shepard's efforts for families with young children here on the island," said Lynne Witham, the Adult Ed Director.  "We are excited to be able to develop a program that will offer our families opportunities to learn about their child's development and growth, as well as what parents tell us they would like to learn to enrich their own lives."

Island Adult & Community Education is looking for a number of local parents with children from the ages of Birth - 3 years old to serve on our program planning group this summer.  The grant funds will cover gas cards and the cost of childcare in order for parents to serve on the group.  Please contact us if you would be interested in helping us create a program that will be what island families want.  You can email Lynne at lwitham@dishs.org, call 348-6443 (leave a message if we can't come to the phone), or let Linda Shepard know the next time you see her.

With offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people.  We are deeply grateful for their generosity and belief in the value of our people and programming.  To learn more about the foundation, visit www.mainecf.org.
